Zero Point - [excerpt from first piece]

With Long Winter taking over The Tranzac for the night, the regular Southern Cross programming was crammed together in the early part of the night before giving over to the all-ages spectacle. Hopefully that meant the early-arrivers got a chance to hear some excellent improvised music, including this cross-generational NYC crew. Deric Dickens (drums), Michael Bates (bass) and Marius Duboule (guit) created a fluid terrain where Daniel Carter (sax, trumpet) could provide the left turns, subverting jazz vocabulary with free-ranging impulses. A savvy observer might have labelled Carter the night's coolest performer at The Tranzac — not only for his past collaborations with plenty jazzy heavies (William Parker, Matthew Shipp, and Hamid Drake, to name just a handful) but underground rock royalty as well (Carter even has an Ecstatic Peace release under his belt).
