Concert Listings Roundup #82

You can read more about why I'm doing listings here. Long story short: This curated and decidedly non-comprehensive list contains nothin' but shows that I am going to/would go to if I had more time.

Gig of the week:

The Music Gallery's Departures Series (feat. Peter Evans / Brian Ruryk / Germaine Liu) / Ratio 2015-02-06 (Friday) [FB event]

Creative music fans are overwhelmed with choice on Friday, with the return of Andrew Wedman's Bass Piano at the Tranzac and Scandinavian free-jazzers Atomic visiting The Rex [listings below], but I'll be upstairs at Ratio for this off-site presentation of the Music Gallery. With three solo sets on tap, this will surely be "intimate", but given the performers involved, it won't necessarily be genteel.

Bandcamp corner:

Some strong work just out from Montréal way, with exciting releases from the Jeunesse Cosmique and Fixture imprints. I first encountered Jérémie Jones' Noordwiijk project at an underattended local gig a few weeks ago in less-than-ideal circumstances — you could hear the Guy From Marketing giving his opinions on Uber throughout the set while he ate his chicken wings — but I was still taken by Jones' electroacoustic laptop pieces. Mixing in live-recorded instrumental fragments, there were some affinities with the chamber music collages that local Nick Storring has been working on lately. When he makes it back to town, this project deserves more of a crowd and a better venue — can we book something at Ratio now? In the meantime, his new tape has just dropped and is recommended:

Meanwhile, the precisionists at Fixture have released this archival oddity, a series of tunes improvised live by algorithmic bots in an Atari ST computer. Programmed to play within human physical limitations but unfettered by any conventional chops or harmonic habits, these bristle with all sorts of uncanny frissons, a woozy feeling that something's not-quite-right.
