The last time I saw Tanya Tagaq play, I was struck by the fact that I was watching an amazing experimental artist captivate a crowd that had come out to catch some grooves. Maybe some of the artificial boundaries we build up between different kinds of music are a lot more porous than we keep telling ourselves — say what you will about the Polaris Prize but its surprise selection of Tagaq's Animalism as this year's winner felt more like a room full of critics had been swept up in that same surprise, rather than checking off any "aren't we audacious" cultural/geographic/gender boxes. Looking around, it seems like this show (already upsized from its original venue) is sold out, so perhaps it's a bit mean of me to give it this week's highest recommendation... but there's nothing I'm more looking forward to being pulled into. [If you did manage to score a ticket, be sure to show up in time to see local mystic groovers Doomsquad get things going.]
