N.B.: There's a smattering of NXNE events here, but for anyone not "doing" the festival, everything below works as a stand-alone event — and if you're intent on avoiding it altogether, there's still plenty of options. For those who are diving into NXNE, look for previews tomorrow and Wednesday.

This casual hootenanny has long been a highlight of the NXNE festival, but it still seems more than a little crazy/amazing that this is now an official event. Featuring some bands that normally play much bigger venues than living rooms and backyards, this is a wonderful day out. If you hurry, you might still be able to grab a ticket for this, but I wouldn't wait around if you're curious. And don't be surprised if your post-festival top picks include classic Appalachian Shape Note singers.
